1. Decision making - its link to problem solving

  • Critical thinking and decision making
  • The ladder of inference reasoning to draw conclusions and take action
  • Points at which decisions need to be taken
  • Avoid the pitfalls in making decisions
  • Become more proactive in taking decisions

2. Decision making within Groups

  • Obtain full participation from the team
  • Achieve buy-in to the plan of action and commitment to decisions
  • Use influencing and negotiating skills where necessary
  • A review of group decision making techniques - use 'Dotmocracy'
  • Work towards achieving consensus decision-making
  • Where consensus does not apply, adopt different approaches based on context
  • Move from idea generation to decision making to accountability

3. The variety of decision making techniques

  • Review the techniques available and use criteria for selection purposes
  • Examples of: Pareto analysis, Paired Comparison, Grid analysis, Decision Trees, Cost-benefit analysis
  • How to adapt techniques where applicable within context - simple or more complex decisions

4. Action Research

  • Implement and review decisions moving forward
  • Maximise learning opportunities
  • Draw appropriate conclusions
  • Evaluate effectiveness against set goals and objectives
