In this simulation, you will meet with James Cahill, President of Icon's Industrial Services and Manufacturing Division in Boston. You are the Vice President of Home Improvement Solutions, a group that produces siding and other home improvement supplies sold to the consumer market. While the product group is profitable, it is the only consumer-targeted group under the Boston division. In addition, the manufacturing facilities and most employees are in Arkansas and Indiana, while only a small administrative staff is located in Boston. For this reason, Mr. Cahill, corporate executives of Icon, and the Board of Directors have decided to sell the product group. In this meeting, you need to use the LISTEN process while reacting to this news.

Simulation Overview:
In this simulation, you will meet with Deborah Cowan, the Director of Finance for Icon's Industrial Services and Manufacturing Division in Boston. As the division's CFO, you need to evaluate a proposal to redesign and reduce the Industrial Cases product line. The proposal, which was developed by an engineer, Colleen Ford, and the Director of Casing Products, John Thomas, calls for eliminating nine case styles and redesigning twelve others. This would reduce total part count by over thirty percent. As part of the evaluation, you need to have a cost-savings analysis done to determine the savings that would be realised through increased efficiency and reduced part count. In this meeting, you need to delegate this project to Deborah using the guidelines for delegating responsibility.

Unit 3: Applying Emotional Intelligence Everyday
Learning Time 1 - 2 hours

  • Differentiate among opportunities to apply Emotional Intelligence.
  • Identify tools to stimulate creativity.
  • Use Emotional Intelligence to encourage creative thinking.

Simulation Overview:
In this simulation, you are the Vice President of Industrial Services and will meet with two of your employees: Robin Carlson, Director-Existing Account Sales, and Lance Helms, Director-New Account Sales. Another Boston product group, Home Improvement Solutions, was sold and most of the employees in the group have elected to take positions with the new company. However, several people located in Boston do not want to relocate and have declined positions with the new company, including two top-performing sales people: Kevin Green and Alice Zimmerman. The President of your division, James Cahill, has asked that you investigate to see if you have positions for them in your group, and he is willing to increase your payroll budget to accommodate them. In this meeting, you need to use Emotional Intelligence to manage change and help your department to think creatively, including using brainstorming to determine if these people can fill roles in your department.
