How do I get more than 20 years of experience into a resume?
- Firstly, your resume should be a summary of specific skills and experience relevant to the role(s) you are targeting, not a list of everything you have ever done
- Keeping your resume to a maximum 3 to 4 pages is easier if you use space wisely. See Adage guidelines on how to write a resume.
Avoid excessive indenting, contain your key achievements to 8 to 10 bullet points for recent roles and 4 to 6 bullet points for roles over 10 years old, avoid lengthy responsibility statements - Use your Career Summary to position your experience, skills and knowledge, and once again, ensure it is relevant to the role(s) you are targeting. I am used to being the interviewer and not the interviewee... any tips?
- As with any business meeting, preparation and planning are paramount - research the role, the interviewers, the organisation and current 'hot topics' thoroughly. Consult our recommendations on how to prepare an interview.
- Treat the interview as a two-way street, it is as much an opportunity for you to assess the organisation and the leadership team as it is for them to assess your suitability for the role
- Try to gain as much crucial information about the role as possible in the first half of the interview - this allows you to better position yourself and answer questions accordingly in the second half.

What steps can I take towards changing career path?
- Firstly, identify your strongest transferable skills (e.g. leadership, project management, budget management). Determine which industries and alternate professions may have a need for this skill set.
- Secondly, think about periods throughout your career that you have been exceptionally motivated and passionate and then list the role and organisational elements that were contributing factors
- Thirdly, highlight your key values and priorities - these may include factors such as family, wealth, work/life balance, status
- Finally, assess your realistic career options taking into account all of the above, do your research and start networking! It would be worth seeking professional career advice at this point to ensure you are moving in the right direction.
