Mature age jobs centre

The Salvation Army, an international movement, is an evangelical part of the universal Christian Church. Its message is based on the Bible. Its ministry is motivated by love of God. Its mission is to preach the gospel of Jesus Christ and meet human needs in his name without discrimination.

The Salvation Army was founded in the slums of London during 1865 by a former Methodist minister, William Booth, who wanted to make the church more accessible to the poor. Originally known as the Christian Mission, the name ‘The Salvation Army’ was adopted in 1878. Since then, the organisation’s structure has been based on military lines to represent the battle being waged against poverty and sin.

From the Army’s earliest days, various social programs grew up alongside the mission’s spiritual ministry, including food shops, shelters and homes for ‘fallen girls’. From this began a network of social service that continues today in 103 counties across the world. The Army’s work in Australia began in Adelaide during 1880.
